Commuting from Fawnskin

Yesterday I found myself commuting ALL the way (7.5 miles) from Fawnskin into the city of Big Bear Lake. Our local Moose Lodge 2085 was competing in the Old Miners’ Days Chili Cook Off. My neighbor and I survived the commute and even found a parking place right away.

Local events are fun because you often get to see other valley residents you don’t otherwise. We sampled lots of chili and voted for our people’s choice. (Sorry 2085 you didn’t make the final favorite). We got to listen to fine entertainment and watch the Miss. Chili Pepper Contest. Down the hill (meaning down the mountain) the Coors Light gal probably would have won. However, in this area we are really loyal to locals and so the local coach ended up winning the trophy. I liked that all her cheerleaders joined her act impromptu.

I managed to arrive home intact, although a little warm, and got some more work done. Five articles in a day, even with social interludes, is really good. (That translates into 5, 000 words or twenty pages for those who need to know.) So, when my other friend called to see if I was up for the Pow Wow in the East end of the valley—I said, “Sure!”

By the time we headed out, the temperature had dropped significantly. I have not been to a Pow Wow in a very long time. The native dancing competitions in full regalia were entrancing. When I was invited to enter the dance circle I could feel the energy. It was quite the event and I came home relaxed and energized.
Today I’ve already finished another article and need to finish some research for one of the books I am working on. When I need a break, I’ll probably go hang out with a neighbor.

No town news to share with you today–but just wait until tomorrow!
