Doris & Derby Parties in Fawnskin

Wow, I hope you didn’t miss all the festivities in town today. After my puppy party I arrived back in Fawnskin shortly before Noon. Ambling my way across town I arrived to Fire Station 49 in time for lunch and to witness the awards ceremonies in honor of Doris Lane, former owner of the Fawnskin Market. (Actually, she still owns the place since escrow won’t close until the end of May.)

First, Lori read a long statement honoring Doris and awarded her with a lifetime membership from the North Shore Improvement Association. The gift were piled high and the crowd milled around also sneaking away to sign her gigantic card, guest book, and journal.

Special thanks to all those who brought potluck items and to the Moose Lodge volunteers Doug, Lil and Pee Wee (and probably others like Dennis) for manning the wagon and serving up hamburgers and hot dogs.

After that crowd left, another crowd arrived and Doris was presented with her own Station 49 helmet. She is an honorary member of our fire department and the guys love her dearly and will miss her.

Shirley Jones made an appearance and snapped a couple of photos with Doris. Many other town locals and weekenders made the trip, too. I hope to have some photos up for you later. Anyway, Doris didn’t cry as she swore she wouldn’t but her face leaked a lot and so did those of her family. Isn’t it great to be loved and appreciated?

Across the street the demolition of the interior of the store continues. I saw the guys this am and the new refrigeration units arrived today. The nephew who will be running the place didn’t appear to be too friendly but it was really early…like 7am. I had a rough start morning and am still babbling.

Rumor has it that Mark is going to cover the ancient (and valuable) flooring with ceramic tile. Rats. He was noticeably absent today. I had hoped to interview him this week but that didn’t happen.

The hit of the party were the CSI t-shirts worn by Doris and her family. The television series has filmed here in Fawnskin but the play on words morphed the popular series name into a popular sentiment around here. What is it? CSI = Can’t Stand Idiots. Gosh, would someone get an opinion around here?

Kentucky Derby
Babaro won the Kentucky Derby and lots of Fawskin Folks were in the Moose Lodge watching. I manage to even catch the pre-derby show on the BIG screen. Smokers now have a nice tented area out behind the lodge and the place has been hoping despite the change. Robert is cooking up his famous ribs and shrimp tonight. It is always a sell out so get there early…otherwise you will miss out.

Production Building
Someone asked me about the old wood burner’s place today. It fell out of escrow early this year. The place is condemned as far as I understand it but also there is some sort of trouble with the title. If any of you know anything else, give me a jingle.

Party People
Many of you know about the blues group that rocked the Moose Lodge after the MS Walk. Mad Mad Marcae & the Roll of Pennies Blues Band are playing here in Fawnskin again. I won’t promote or frequent the establishment (Remember the first amendment issue? See January 12, 2006 Bad Behavior.) however you might want to amble into town and support the band because they are hot! (Is that too archaic?)

Something Fishy
This am tons of fishermen were out early. I was out walking at 5:30am and they were already out on the lake and on the shoreline. The trout classic event is coming up so get out there with your rod and reel.

Today was a beautiful day and tonight should be the same. If you want to support some Fawnskin business owners head out to Serenity Place in Big Bear City where they have a new artist reception tonight beginning at 6pm until 8pm. The artist is Nigerian. Cindy and Louis own the joint and they live over near Canyon.

Kat, I couldn’t find the name of the handyman. If anyone out there knows of someone who is good with woodwork and building–drop me a line–one of our neighbors needs some help with a project on Mohawk.
