Restaurant Review: Martha Green’s Eating Room

Enter Martha Green’s

Of course you have to stop at great places to eat when you are traveling–because once you are on the road you might not find something to your liking…but more on that later. Last weekend’s trip began with a lunch stop at the Inland Empire’s famous, Martha Green’s Eating Room.

One of the things we like to do when we leave the mountain, is to go places where the service is great and the food is fabulous. Honestly, we have about given up on most of the local valley restaurants. If is not one thing it is another. But Hannah, our waitress at the Eating Room could be a coach for many of the food servers up here–she went above and beyond with service…and of course, the food was fabulous as usual.

Not too long ago I wrote about the remodel going on at Martha Green’s in Redlands. The last time we visited, I chatted with Martha but because GG doesn’t rate–she never sent me the invite to come down for the grand opening of the new addition. The nice thing about this remodel is that there is a lot more seating. I imagine she will eventually add more as they place keeps getting more and more popular.

This time we hit it right and didn’t wait a second for seating. However, by the time we left, both rooms were packed to capacity and a large group of people were waiting. This is something you should except at this local establishment during peak times such as the weekend.

I first was introduced to Martha’s chocolate cake by a pal who thought I needed chocolate therapy. Wow. It was probably the best cake I have ever tasted. At the time, I was not aware that she had the Eating Room but when I searched for a location to meet a friend from down-the-hill, I stumbled upon it and was delighted.

I’ve been to the place three times now and every time the service and food is exceptional. The staff smile and nothing is a problem. The Eating Room Breakfast specials include HM’s favorite, the Sinful French Toast. The decadent meal is made with croissants, cream, eggs, maple syrup, cream cheese and vanilla. My personal favorites include the breakfast skillets.

This visit we decided to lunch at Martha Green’s. HM order the tuna melt and I ordered the Big Fat Greek sandwich. Both items were good, however I would have preferred to have more veggies as described in the menu and less bread. Honestly, I combined the fixin’s into one half of the sandwich.

When we received the bill, we also got one of the famous cookies as incentive for tipping. Did you know that there is a psychological component behind giving you something? It actually increases tipping and if you have questions about HOW to tip this book got a lot of spin last year: Tipping for Success: Secrets for How to Get In and Get Great Service.

Alas, we were not done. When on vacation you have to indulge! So we both ordered cake. I had the orange cake and HM indulged in the white chocolate raspberry. We could not decide which was better. The white chocolate raspberry was a delicate blend and the whipped icing was light while the orange cake was a dense taste sensation with an intense burst of orange highlighted with cream cheese frosting.

Martha Green’s also conducts an afternoon tea

Well, we stopped back by Martha Green’s eating room last week. What a disappointment in the sandwich realm again. I ordered the Portabello and found that it was mostly bread again. The sweet potato fries were great and so was the cake–and HM ordered the Sinful dish again–always fabulous. Ultimately, I find I will not order another sandwich from Martha Green’s again.
