Stay Off the Ice in Fawnskin
Above: Dogs and Coyote out on the ice of Grout Bay
It never ceases to amaze me how stupid people can be. I can understand the dogs venturing out on the ice, they don’t read the signs that say, “Stay off the ice!”
Big Bear visitors fail to understand that it is not only unsafe–and it is illegal to go out on to the lake ice. Over here, there are signs telling people to stay out of the closed eagle habitat area–but people ignore those signs, too.
The ice on Big Bear Lake and Grout Bay (part of Big Bear Lake) never gets thick enough or strong enough due to temperature conditions to safely support those who walk on it…although it did in the past when we had heavy winters and consistent cold temperatures.
Hypothermia is a real threat to those who fall into the water. If you get caught out on the lake ice, you could be ticketed by with fines up to $500.
Everyone says it, but I’ll mention it again–Don’t jeopardize your safety, or that of rescue personnel, by venturing out on to the ice up in this area.
If you see someone fall through the ice call 911
