La Paz Bakery, The Hook & Other Musings

Last night we had the privilege of joining a couple of friends for dinner at the Captain’s Anchorage. It is a haunt (no pun intended–in case you don’t know the Big Bear restaurant is a host to a ghost named George) I used to frequent most every night in my early years here in the Big Bear Valley.

The staff has been a stable factor in the popularity along with the good service and food. I had not been in for a while and was happily surprised–I don’t know why. Lorraine, Sean, Jenny, and the rest of the gang have always been super friendly and it is always nice to see them and catch up.

There were many other valley notables in “The Hook” as many locals call the place.

Afterwards, I asked HM to drive by the location of the new bakery so I could eyeball it. I had been discussing it with another valley local and since we planned to venture over later in the week, I thought I’d check it out first. To our surprise, the La Paz Bakery was open.

It was a flashback to my past since my family owned and operated a panaderia along with a few other businesses. I’ve been whining about how this valley needs a bakery–and so here is one. The nice news is that the current hours are 7am until 9pm.

I am not sure how that is going to work out for them but they do have the ovens in the back and the pan de juevo can be viewed behind glass doors and is self serve. You grab a tray and tongs when you enter and load up your goods on trays. If you have ever been to Mexico, you will be familiar with it.

In addition, the have pastel de tres leche (tres leches cake ), Mexican candy, flan, Jarritos (sodas), and advertise wedding cakes, birthday cakes, and American bread. I didn’t see any bread out last night–but it was late. I miss good bread and perhaps their bolillos will fill in the void. Anyway, the place is take out only but drop by and check it out–next to Radio Shack in the Kmart center.

La Paz Bakery is at 42124 Big Bear Blvd. Suite F in Big Bear Lake, CA 92315 and the phone number is (909) 866-8217.
