Tonight

Thursday, June 12, join Scott Hoffman at the Big Bear Discovery Center for a lecture about hiking, biking, and climbing. Scott Hoffman is the author of Climbing Routes of Southern California’s Big Bear Valley.

The book features information about all of the climbing areas in the San Bernardino Mountains. The presentation is from 7 to 8 p.m.

Fawnskin town clean up begins at 10:00am. Meet at the Moose Lodge or call (909) 866-3013.

On Saturday, June 14, from 1 to 3 p.m., Hoffman returns to the Discovery Center with Jim Hickman for a book signing. Hickman is the author of Big Bear Trails.

The San Bernardino National Forest Association will also host a “National Get Outdoors Day” at the Discovery Center on Saturday from 10am to 3pm. This is a new annual event geared to encouraging healthy, active, outdoor fun. In addition to regularly scheduled activities the event will include giveaways for kids and information provided by local outdoors and health-related sponsors.

The Long Run: A Musical Tribute to The Eagles.
Held at the Discovery Center Amphitheater. Ticket prices: Adults $15-$20 (18+); Teens $10; 12 and under free. Season Tickets Available Adults $55 Teens $45. Gates open at 5:30pm. Concerts begin at 7:00pm. Americana food plus beer, wine and soft drinks available for purchase; no outside beverages allowed. Parking is free and tickets are available at the Discovery Center Adventure Outpost. Ticket Hotline (909) 382-2780.

Victorian Festival: July 5-6, 2008

The Big Bear Valley Renaissance Society, Inc. is delighted to announce will host the first Victorian Festival on July 5th and 6th, 2008 in Fawnskin, California.

The Victorian Festival is a day in Charles Dickens’ London and will be filled with lively and colorful characters from both literature and history. Join the fun and adventure in this elegant era with hundreds of costumed players in music halls, pubs and dance parties. Explore the winding lanes, finding trinkets and treasures while surrounded by enticing aromas of hearty foods and the joyous sound of music in the air.

Some of the activities will include a Victorian Tea, Tea with the Queen, and readings by Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, and other literary artists of the 19th century. We will have demonstrations of the Gatling gun, cannon, and a battle of the Queen’s Royal Army.

Entertainment will also be provided on five stages throughout the day. And, for the younger set, we will have the children’s craft & game area.

The Grand Masque Ball will be held under the stars on Saturday night.

One-day general admission: $10 (Children 5 and under are free.)

Admission as participant $25 (Formal attire required: Victorian costume preferred.)
Ball spectators admission only $5 (Regular clothes acceptable.)

Paddlefest: Saturday, July 12 – Sunday, July 13, 2008
Entry Fee $50 up to July 4, 2008 or late registration $75.

  • Boat demos with Emotion and Seda kayaks and outdoor-industry sports exhibit with Keen Footwear, Danuu Canoe and Kayak Covers, Smith Optics and Equada Outfitters.
  • Paddle Board and Standup Paddle Board demonstration by Team Sole Adventure Racers Paul Romero and Karen Lundgren at Noon.
  • Evening slide presentation at 8:00 pm by local photographers Scott Cordner and Cathleen Calkins highlighting their kayak expedition to Central Siberia’s Lake Baikal.
  • Clinics at Captain John’s Fawn Harbor Marina ($15 each)
  • Canoeing 101 (10:00 am) Canoe Essentials
  • Kayaking 101 (10:00 am) Kayak Essentials
  • Kayaking Self Rescue (1:00 pm) Wet Exits and Re-entry

Sunday, July 13, 2008 – 7:00 am

  • Outdoor-industry sports exhibit with Keen Footwear, Danuu Canoe and Kayak Covers, Smith and Equada Outfitters.
  • Races begin from Captain John’s Fawn Harbor Marina: (canoe, kayak, solo, tandem, men, women)
    • 10K Race (8:00 am) Racers will go through an out and back route to the Big Bear Lake dam inside the mile buoy markers.
    • 5K Fun Paddle (9:00 am) Paddlers will negotiate a figure-8 course set in Grout Bay.
    • Kids’ Fun Paddle (9:30 am) Kids 12 and under (free) will take place at Captain John’s Fawn Harbor
  • Awards ceremony & raffle (11am) in each race category
