Big Bear Fishing Report & Troutfest Results

Above: Kelly Bremer of Fontana, was trout fishing off Gilner Point on October 1st when she landed two nice channel catfish on worms and salmon eggs. The kitties weighed in at 12.8 and 13.0 lbs.

Big Bear Fishing Report by Alan Sharp.

Rainbow Trout fishing tanked this past week on Big Bear Lake. The word is that after the Troutfest stocking the fish would not bite.

Over 1000 anglers came up to fish over the two contest days but only caught 550 fish. Water temperatures dropped to 61 degrees throughout the lake, oxygen levels remained low and the algae continued to bloom.

Water quality and high winds probably are the reasons for the poor catch rate, but no one knows for sure (or isn’t saying).

So, if you are hankering for some good fishing there are a lot of trophy sized fish and their smaller cousins plying the waters of Big Bear Lake.

Lets hope the water temperatures continue to drop, the lake turns over, the algae stops blooming and somehow we get more oxygen for these stressed fish.

Come up now before the weather goes south so you can score your share of big fish.

Troutfest Results

More than 12,000 pounds of fish were stocked in Big Bear Lake in preparation for the annual Big Bear Troutfest sponsored by Western Outdoor News.

Anglers were motivated to endure the cool temperatures on Big Bear Lake by theĀ  $77,000 in cash and prizes.

Unfortunately nobody caught the tagged fish which would have won a new Ford F150 or $30,000 in cash.

However, Harold Horner of Victorville was the $10,000 grand prize boat winner and Michael Richards of Rancho Cucamonga won $200 in gift certificates.

The biggest fish award for the weekend went to Davie Gonzales of La Puente (4.15 pound trout).

Mike Kroes of Whittier won first place in the men’s division with nine fish weighing in over ten pounds. Charles Ball of Ventura was awarded second place, and third place was awarded to our own Fawnskin Honorary Mayor, Gene Cyr.

In the women’s division Lynne McCullogh of Los Angeles took first place with ten fish weighing in over 11 pounds. Second place was awarded to Brandy Finch of San Jacinto, and third place went to another local, Jeri Peacock-Licht of Sugarloaf.
