Edelweiss Books in Big Bear

So after a bizarre night of dreams I headed over to Big Bear Lake to visit Carla over at Edelweiss Books in the Big Bear Village.

Why? Because my dreams concerned her selling the store.

She is.

The store was listed for sale on Friday, February 27, 2009.

Rats!

One of the unique aspects of living in the mountain community has been the fact that we have been blessed with a variety of independent bookstores.

Although I have not been out and about too much there days, I’ve haunted all of them regularly. Each has a unique personality and focus.

Edelweiss Books has been popular with locals and tourists alike and the store has successfully survived over thirty-something years in its present location–which happens to be on one of the heavier foot traffic locations in the village.

The little store has featured popular authors, regional specialty books, maps, and more.

Big Bear visitors love the assortment of games and puzzles and so make it a regular stop during their regular or annual visits.

Owner Carla Ogilvie took over the store in 2002 and has done a fabulous job of revamping the store’s image and inventory. (She was also instrumental in assisting with the first mountain literary tea with author Steve Hodel.)

The store has done very well but with a shift in the economy she decided it was time to sell.

She jokingly says “I’m open to donations.”

It is a sad thing.

The place (which does over $180,000 in annual sales) is offered at a steal of $72,500 with¬† goodwill and inventory included–plus the fixtures, equipment, furniture, and signage.

I’d rather see her stay and operate the place–and Carla loves Big Bear and feels the same but said with the ill timed storms and the empty streets she thinks it is best that she sell.

On Thursday, March 12th local real estate agents will tour the facility and Edelweiss Books will host an Open House for anyone interested in purchasing a long established business on Friday, March 13th.

In the meantime, drop by to see Carla, pick up a card or gift–or send large donations!

If you are interested in the business, call Lisa Sitton at Spencer Real Estate (909) 866-3444.

To chat with Carla, drop by or call the store at (909) 866-7734.
