Big Bear Fishing Report

Above: Another Fish Kiss?

Big Bear Fishing Report by Alan Sharp

My partner, fishin’ buddy and long time friend passed away last Monday. Greg Boll was an important part of this community and will be missed by his family and friends. He touched and impacted many peoples lives. His loss is great and he will be remembered forever.

Trout are are now being caught during all hours of the day. Late afternoon until dark is still the best but you can find fish in the morning hours too.

Trolling with leadcore line or bait fishing with a slip bobber is still the most effective. The exception  is near the dam where bait anglers suspending PowerBait and nightcrawlers from 10 feet to the bottom are finding nice trout once again.

Trollers going down to three colors from morning to afternoon then up to one and a half at dusk have done well with spoons in nickel and pearl. A flat lined Rapala in gold or silver has worked well at dusk.

Oxygen levels increased this week and are good down to 56 feet at the dam (bottom) 36 feet at Papoose Bay, and 20 feet near the west ramp and observatory.

Water temps are holding from 67 to 68 degrees so the trout can be found in all of these areas. Limits are coming in from “Trout Triangle” once again.

Clarity remains low at 5 feet as an algae bloom has turned the water green.

Smallmouth Bass are being caught on mini-jigs and spinners along the Observatory jetty and similar rock jetties around the lake.

Catfish continue to hit mackerel and Gulp Dough on the sandy bottom east of Eagle Point.

No news on the bluegill even though tens of thousands have been planted. Could it be that the bass ate them all?

Crappie are scattered and hard to find, but had a good spawn.
