Local Post Offices Not Targeted

After the USPS reported a $7 billion loss for 2008 someone asked me if I knew anything about the small post office closures.

Here is the official release from the USPS on the closures.

Basically, due to financial challenges the USPS faces 700 possible closures might occur across the country.

According to the USPS:

  • total mail volume processed in 2008 was 203 billion pieces,
  • the average load of mail processed daily in the nation’s 32,741 post offices is 667 million,
  • and mail volume reported fell by 9.5 billion pieces in fiscal year 2008 (GAO reports),
  • projections for fiscal year 2009 are not good check out these financials.

Many locals are aware that the post office is trying to counter losses with staffing cuts, removal of collection boxes, and increases in the price of stamps.

The earliest any location is expected to close is October–but Post Master Mike said that when he checked, none of the local Big Bear Post Offices were listed on that list.
