So today is the day that the 50 year lease on the current Moonridge Zoo property expires, but in the nick of time, an extension of the current lease was granted until a location for the new facility can be acquired.

The Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District is working to locate and purchase property to house the 160 wild animals and birds (about 80 species).

Friends of the Moonridge Zoo (FOMZ) have been working with the county parks district to facilitate the move to a new location.

Although the hope was to construct a new zoo in Fawnskin, adjacent to the Discovery Center, this has been fraught with interdepartmental red tape and other challenges.

Once the county has secured the new site, the architectural design firm will re-map the original Master Park Plan to fit the site chosen.

Third District Supervisor Neil Derry is allegedly involved in helping find a suitable site for the animals at the Moonridge Zoo.

Moonridge Animal Park in Big Bear Lake is located at 4325 Goldmine Drive and first opened in 1959 as a rehabiliation facility. It has been located on the 2.5 acre parcel since then.

Today, Moonridge Animal Park is the only zoo in San Bernardino County as well as a licensed, designated care and rehabilitation facility for injured or confiscated wildlife.
