Jordan Romero of Fawnskin

local Fawnskin boy Jordan Romero not the youngest to make the summit of Everest
Above: Congratulations to local boy, Jordan Romero for taking action to make his dreams come true!

So, although I don’t normally post over the weekend–Jordan Romero accomplished his goal last night so I had to announce it in the “local” rag.

You know I always have fun reminding the “official” sources about how nothing ever happens in Fawnskin or to people of Fawnskin–once they put it in print I could not refrain from poking fun at that erroneous statement.

So, you already probably know that Jordan Romero (a local boy) reached the summit of Everest over the weekend.

Which makes him the youngest person to do so at the ripe old age of 13.

I used to  have breakfast with Jordan and his grandparents here in Fawnskin on a regular basis, and like most locals, have watched him grow up from a youngster with a passion for animals to a young man whose goal is to stand on top of the world on the seven summits.

For those of you who are interested, track Team Jordan via GPS online as they descend and see some of the action shots taken since his departure from LAX on April 5, 2010 (and earlier photos too).

Locals like me were sad (and mad) to hear that some of his sponsors pulled out right before he flew out from California–something that a lot of people did not know about.

Also, Big Bear failed to give him a community send off–then there is the rumor that nothing has been planned for him in the valley to celebrate his accomplishment.

Personally, I think these “news” items are a shame.

Even if Jordan had not made the summit, something should have been planned to celebrate his efforts to accomplish his his dream.

So much for the so called, “child honoring” community.

And I am not sure why the sponsors failed to honor their commitments.

A lot of news circulates between locals on Facebook but Jordan Romero’s blog is also a good place to get updates on his progress.

So far his story has been found at ESPN, the Los Angeles Times, and the News Provider and by the time this is posted, probably most major news outlets.

Anyway, congratulations Jordan–from all of us in Fawnskin.

Leigh Ann–make sure you bring him to the Moose Lodge so we can all celebrate and make a fuss!

Even though it might not matter to you–we love you and are very proud to see you accomplish your dream.

Jordan Romero is due home shortly and now the Big Bear Valley plans to honor the 13-year-old but how, when and where the celebration will take place is still up in the air.

Tentative plans are to hold something at the Middle School on Wednesday, June 9, 2010.

The event may be a fundraiser for the cross country team and to help teachers who received pink slips but plans are diluted since the city of Big Bear Lake and the Chamber of Commerce were planning something different for another day.

A second meeting is scheduled for today to work out the details.
