Highway 330 Open May 27-May 30 2011 (Memorial Day Weekend)

San Bernardino – Caltrans is pleased to announce that State Route 330 (SR 330) will be open for the Memorial Day weekend beginning Friday, May 27, at 6:00 a.m. to Monday, May 30, at 11:59 p.m.

Caltrans encourages the public and mountain communities to use the route and partake in the beautiful mountain scenery, tourist locations, and convenient weekend trips up and down the hill. The use of SR 330 will also alleviate traffic congestion on SR 18 during the holiday weekend, when many part-time residents open their homes for the summer season. There is an event planned at Snow Valley Ski Resort above Running Springs throughout the weekend among other exciting activities planned in the communities across the mountains.

Caltrans District 8 Director, Dr. Ray Wolfe, is extremely pleased with the progress made on the $23.5 million emergency project. Director Wolfe continued by saying, “The fact that we are able to open this road to the public in less than six months after disastrous failures of the roadway embankment in several locations is a testament to the dedication and commitment of all Caltrans employees involved, the CHP, the USFS, the Federal Highway Administration, our local elected leaders, and the local media outlets. The support we received from Senator Dutton, Assembly Member Cook, Assembly Member Donnelly, and Mayor Bill John of Big Bear Lake as we struggled with the dramatic impacts to the public caused by the closure of SR-330 were key in our ability to marshal the necessary resources to effect such a quick restoration of the highway. I am hopeful that those who travel this road over the weekend after being denied the privilege for months will appreciate the effort of all involved to expedite the opening. I am honored to have the opportunity to work with such fine individuals whose focus from the moment the highway failed was to restore access to the public as quickly as possible. Come on up and enjoy one of the real treasures in Southern California; we’re open again.”

SR 330 will go back to commute hours on Tuesday, May 31. The commute hours will continue to be Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. until further notice. Motorists are advised that as work continues to restore the route there will be times when the commute hours will be suspended. The Department will continue to keep the public informed on the progress of the project and notify you of any changes as warranted.
