Flap Jack!

Flap Jack! | Fawnskin Flyer

So, the juvenile eagle known around these parts as “Jack” has been hard at work exercising those wing muscles. Barbara Jordan, a local wildlife photographer, has been documenting his development and shot this fine photo–which I call, “Flap Jack!”

Yes, yes, it is true–I’ve gone wild with the puns simply because I have to continually amuse myself. But really, he had lift off on the nest. Barbara estimates it was about 10 inches or so.

I think we should make some bets as to when he actually takes flight.

Once he leaves the nest I hope I can still track him, there is something cathartic about being able to march out on my deck, set up the scope and get a good view of how he is doing.

Yesterday he sensibly bedded down early–it was cold and wet!

Down at the creek I am hoping for higher water levels. Despite knowing nature’s way, it still disturbs me to see so many trout stranded on the creek bed.

They’ve lost their lives and the predatory birds are serving as the clean up crew. They seem to prefer the eyeballs and then pick at the rest.

I haven’t ambled out to check today but after that nice day of precipitation, I am anticipating the water level to be up.

North Shore Wine Fest

Now people around these parts can be whiners or winos but nobody has claimed to be very sophisticated.

To change things up a bit, the North Shore Improvement Association is hosting its first wine tasting fundraiser on June 23, 2012 at the Discovery Center starting at 5:30pm until? The event will feature 6 to 8 wines, paring them food–tapas style.

There will be games, prizes, live music and good conversation. NSIA reps have not finalized the menu but swear the food parings will be both interesting and hearty. Ticket price includes a full glass of wine of your choice, subject to stock on hand.

Varietals and the menu will be revealed as things are finalized. Cost is $25 per person and tickets are available to the first 50. Join up by emailing toddkathymurphy “insert at symbol” hotmail.com.

That’s it for the TOT this week. Are you ready for the next storm tomorrow? Should I create a poll on Jack’s anticipated initial flight date?

Hey Bird Watcher…….. has Jack taken flight? I’ve been watching an immature baldie at this end of the lake and was wondering. Hope things are good.

They think Jack was hatched around February 10th but they don’t know for sure. Estimates are that he will take to the wing in a week or so. (Hoping on my birthday!) Once he leaves the nest it is unlikely he will return but will be in the area for a while.
