Diversions in Fawnskin

Bookend Dogs

How do you like these live bookends? These two dogs are Fawnskin residents that visit the Big Bear Lake Starbucks almost daily. I thought they were precious and knew you needed a stirring, breaking news photo and so figured that I had to deliver one with all the pressure on me around these parts.

Speaking of which, GG has a good excuse for only posting once this week…actually more than one reason. But then I don’t get paid so you have to put up with it whether your like it or not.

The first is that I have been a bit under the weather.

Under the Weather Fawnskin (c) 2013 Guerrero Ink

Yes, yes, it has been snowing, raining, cloudy and sunny but I am not talking literally! After months of exposure to sickos, I’ve been fighting a cold which kept me in bed and seriously weakened me from getting out on my daily walks.

The second, is that I went across town to help a neighbor. Since I promised I would not disclose anything due to privacy, and since you probably already know about it (case in point, I got a call yesterday from a Fawnskin resident who would not give up her source for the info), I can only say that all is well and I’ll leave it to them to fill you in with the details if they choose–and if you rate.

If those distractions weren’t bad enough, I’ve been playing catch up with an online project and a big offline commitment.

As for this week’s news, it will all be crammed in today. You won’t hear from me again until next week–unless something happens that I need to report to you, which I doubt since it has been so quiet.

Escrow Closure Delayed

For those of you pacing down in front of the building for sale in town, waiting anxiously for activity or for it to open, you have to be patient and wait.

Dale gave me a call to say that the escrow was delayed another couple of weeks. So, no gourmet hot dogs for Fawnskin for while yet.

Grout Creek 2013 (c) Guerrero Ink

Grout Creek

GG took a slow amble with her pal, Bear (the dog) and found Grout Creek slowly trickling down toward Big Bear Lake. It isn’t much but then the weather has been seriously odd.

Reports are that higher up, toward Butler Peak, shaded areas still hold a serious snow pack. Locals hope so! Many valley residents enjoy the trout running up the creek every spring.

A new snow storm is expected this week with some accumulation expected, but things change so quickly, all GG can say is, “We will see.”

Eagle Eyes

Now GG has not been out to verify the nest site of Fawnskin’s local eagles but if you want an opportunity to help out you can do so this Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 8:00am until 10:00am.

The USFS needs volunteers to help count the bald eagles wintering here in the San Bernardino National Forest.

If you would like to participate, meet at the Discovery Center at 40971 North Shore Drive/Hwy 38 in Fawnskin. For more information call (909) 382-2790.

And please take some action shots for me and send a full report on the nest site.

Polar Plunge

Locals and other supporters will take a plunge into the chilly water of Big Bear Lake on Saturday, March 9, 2013 in The Polar Plunge fundraising efforts for the Special Olympics Inland Empire athletes.

You can participate or simply donate a minimum of $50 for a spot in the chicken coop (with the other sensible sorts) to cheer and watch while staying warm and dry.

NSIA Potluck

Thanks to those folks who put on the pressure. I am happy to report that GG is back on the NSIA announcement list so I can keep you in the loop.

So, here it is: The North Shore Improvement Potluck will take place on Monday, March 11, 2012 at the Old Miller School House at 1178 Chickasaw Lane in Fawnskin.

NSIA is celebrating St Patrick’s Day and will be serving up corned beef and cabbage. Neighbors are asked to compliment this dinner with appetizers, vegetables, salads, Irish soda bread and Desserts.

2013 memberships are still being accepted at the potlucks or via mail if you have not already paid. Dues are $10.00 for individuals or $20.00 per family.

Bring a dish, meet the neighbors, and catch up on all the scuttlebutt! If you have any questions call (310) 880-3645 or (909) 866-5028.

Moonshine & Mayhem 2013

Moonshine & Mayhem

The Moonshine & Mayhem fundraising event was a great success and yes, GG attended with a neighbor.

It must be a record, since I’ve been out about four times in the last month. My neighbor said, “Wow, people are sure surprised to see you and keep commenting on the fact you are out.”

Yep, it is true but also a good sign because it means I am slowly getting better each day.

Alrighty, that is it for me this week. See you on Tuesday.

    Hey GG,
Just wanted to say thanks for the Fawnskin update. I haven’t been over in awhile, but things are settling down. I’m looking forward to Spring and the Trout running up the stream!

Thanks for stopping by and it will be great to watch them. Always fun to see valley visitors make the “long commute” over to see nature at its best.

Just wanted to say thanks for the Newsletter and I’m happy to hear you are feeling better – although I didn’t really know you weren’t well but figured as much reading between the lines.

Have you heard of any locals spotting a very interesting looking cat? We saw a beautiful cat Sunday in our back yard – he looked almost like a cross between a domestic cat and a bobcat. I’ll post a pic on the Facebook page so you can see it. Definitely larger than your typical domestic and very interesting markings… Is there such a thing as a hybrid?

Thanks for the note. I discovered that the email updates were not going out and was able to fix that. Yes, been a hard road to recovery with lots of ups and downs but mostly trending up–although the set backs can be discouraging. As far as hybrids, they do exist but are unnatural as domestic pets are prey (food) for wild cats. See this article on hybrids http://www.arkanimals.com/ark/ws_feline_cat_hybrids.html and I’ll watch for the photo over on Facebook.
