Stormy in Fawnskin

Rain Storm Fawnskin

So this week we got some much needed rain.

Seeing the dismal state of Grout Creek made me sad and the ground elsewhere is sucking up water big time.

Perhaps we’ll see some rise in the water level but I am not holding my breath.

One of the neighbors was saying that his favorite fishing spot was five feet shallower than normal but, to put this into perspective, when I moved here you could walk across Grout Bay without trouble.

Now that is dry.

Locals are talking about fire danger before summer even arrives–so that guessing the concern is circulating throughout the valley.

Missing Mike

Post Master Mike will be off for a couple of days as his wife had to undergo should surgery.

The Post Office, in all its infinite wisdom, sent someone up from down the hill to be trained on Monday since Pam is not available.

Never mind that we were told locals would be staffing the location when needed from BBC.

If you listen to the scuttlebutt, you know that everyone working for this entity seems to slaving away because they are shorthanded.

Those who are working are likely finding the situation to be a frustrating challenge.

For the Birds

Many of you are aware that GG started birding just over a year ago and so I was glad to see that the Big Bear Discovery Center is celebrating International Migratory Bird Day this Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 10:00 until 3:00pm.

Sadly, I may be off the mountain that day.

International Migratory Bird Day will kick off the Center’s 1st annual Birdhouse Art Contest. A total of 20 local artists donated their time and artistic talents to participate in the contest as a fund-raiser for the Center’s environmental education programs.

Funds raised through the silent auction will go towards the purchase of a class set of binoculars to provide local students with the opportunity to get engaged and inspired to become migratory bird stewards.

The silent auction will begin on Saturday, May 11 at 10:00am and run through Monday, May 27th (Memorial Day) at 4:30pm. Starting bids begin at $25 and the birdhouses will be on display at the center or can be viewed through the Big Bear Discovery Center Facebook page.

There will be a lot of different activities on Saturday so plan on heading over to Fawnskin.

That’s it for me now but GG had good news from the doc and it is exciting after five years of challenges.
