This morning I decided to stay home instead of risking a jaunt admist all the visitors to the area. As I sat on my deck with my java, the wind picked up and it feels like a Santa Ana. Dry, hot, yuck. Usually, that type of condition makes it really cold here…and last night was nippy. I managed to go out without a sweatshirt, a rare event since I always expect the weather to change in a heart beat.
Last night I chatted with Don, the Moose Lodge administrator. I’ve noticed a big influx of younger people and he verified my observation. So, come on down if you have not joined. Lots of laughter and some great events. Don’t miss the bake sale fundraiser later today.
I managed to enjoy myself yesterday for a couple of hours during my afternoon break. I paddled over to Bear Creek Nut & Coffee and touched base with a friend. Nice to enjoy the solitude of the lake. I won’t be out there this weekend, but maybe I’ll go dancing with a few pals. I’ll be at Serenity Place for the artist reception. Drop by if you get a chance.
AND don’t forget about the quilt show, the arts and crafts show, and the rendezvous this weekend.
BTW: The Baptist Church is accepting donations for the Red Cross. People are going to need a variety of things. Check with the volunteers there but I would imaging socks, underwear, toothbrushes and other luxuries would be appreciated. You could drop by Kmart or the Dollar store for some items. I’ve updated my animal page if you are interested in the zoo and animal survivor news.

Next issue: Fawnskin After Dark…be sure to get me your submissions or bend my ear with your stories!
Nutty Squirrel by David Schmidt Not too long ago a young squirrel fell out of a tree and sat dazed on the wooden stairway where I was working. His mother was nearby and yelled at me to stay away. I backed off since you never know what a maternal squirrel will do.
This youngster was really barely moving when I first came upon him. His eyes were blank, and he had no reaction to my approach.
The nest was sixty or seventy feet up, so whether he had fallen that far, or from a lower limb, is hard to say.
Well, momma ran around for a while as “junior” got his head back together, and he slowly reached off of the staircase toward the tree trunk. He got a grip, literally, and headed up a few feet at a time watched by his parental unit perched ten feet or so above him.
The adult was squawking, “get back on the horse after the fall,” or something like that.
After his long tumble I am sure he did not need a long lecture about watching where he was going.
Unless it was not an accident…What if he did not FALL?
Maybe his sibling pushed him out in a dispute over quality (nursing) time with mom? No better way to increase your chances of survival than to see that a competitor has an early exit from the nest. How would the brother/sister react as the groggy, ‘bump on head’, junior returns?
More on this developing story later, as I seek to interview the neighbors, and see if there have been any domestic squabbling lately. Stay tuned for another nutty story!
Big Bear Summers Could Use A Makeover Mountain Peeves by Colleen Nuzzo This weekend officially ends the summer and for once I am glad! The rugrats being out of school for a traditional twelve weeks was taxing on many kids and parents. I never thought I’d hear my 11 year-old say he was looking forward to starting school.
Through good friends, and family with ticket connections, I managed to have the best summer since moving to Big Bear. I actually went to the Orange County Fair for the first time ( and I am from Huntington Beach), saw a band I loved in the 80’s, went to the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach and drank in some awesome art (even finding an artist that does the kind of work I have been looking for), and kicked back to some foot-tapping music. Yes, I had some great fun here in the valley, but it’s sad that a lot of my entertainment was found off the mountain.
Visitors to the valley travel up here to enjoy our festivities, yet most of our attractions are the same old events, with the same old vendors year after year. That’s probably why I used to spend the weekends hiding out at home away from the traffic and crowds.
The Chambers in all burgs plot out the events well in advance, but don’t seem to know the term “new blood.” I would like to see more diversity in the entertainment in the valley, and have the residents getting catered to as well as tourism, for a change.
Complacency threads it’s tentacles deep. The food industry has become almost unpalatable. The restaurants that open with a detour from the usual fare soon get old, because they never change their menu! Let’s get real–a little bit of rosemary and dill go a long way. At least try some different specials other than catch of the day. When the North Shore Cafe quit their fine dining on weekend nights, we lost the best cuisine in the entire valley.
I have to say that since moving to Fawnskin my life has been more stimulating than the previous ten years living in Big Bear. The community spirit gives me the warm and fuzzy feeling that I desired when I made the move to the mountains.
Yes, there is still room for improvement in these hills, but for now, I am happy to be where I live, and am no longer “looking” to find paradise. I have found it on my deck when I first rise in the morning, and that’s not a bad place to be.
Fawnskin Community Church People have been asking if I know anything about the Fawnskin Community Church. Yep, I do.
Just fooling around. The place was purchased by a private owner and is being converted into a private residence. Robert and Christie are the owners and are relocating from the Los Angeles area. At the moment they are heavily into repairs. I was told that the place was last run the “Set Free Ministries,” which was known around town as a biker ministry. They conducted concerts as part of their ministry but couldn’t make their payments. Many of the neighbors are happy the 3800 square foot facility is going to be a private abode.
Bad Behavior Rats! No reports for BB this week, so give me a jingle with any tips.
To answer a couple of questions: -No, the radio station never got back to me after my last comments and invitation for them to post. -Regarding the Fawn Lodge. I am waiting back for some answers and will make sure this gets a feature soon.
