NSIA Potluck

The North Shore Improvement Association’s Potluck was lightly attended but the camaraderie and programs were excellent. Many residents know that we have just kicked off the race for Fawnskin mayor known locally as “the most honest election in the country.” This is because we don’t make any bones about buying our votes and the candidate with the most money wins.

NSIA boasts 143 members and the 2006 board includes Chris Weber, Betty Sunseri, Don Eades and Rick Fromm. If you are interested in being a board member, throw in your hat!

On October 29th from 11am-2pm is the Fire Awareness Fall Festival to be held at BBARWA (Big Bear Area Regional Water Agency). There will be free food, a DJ and many agencies in attendance. On that note, BBARWA just got a national award but Don wouldn’t reveal what it was as he was pushing people to attend the meeting tonight.

There has been a proposed ½ cent tax increase for the Big Bear Lake area. Reports are that 82% of the monies will come from visitors and 18% from visitors. Keep your eyes open for news on this issue.

Denise Proffer reported on the fire safe council activities and some of the important issues concerning wildfire safety and evacuation. Apparently it took 14 hours to evacuate the valley and the issues raised during that time are being worked on.

FYI:
If you spot smoke you should call 911 and not any of the local agencies. This gets the system in gear quickly. Cell phone calls go to the CHP so call from a landline (home phone or business line) instead.

Here are the numbers mentioned:
Forestry: 909.383.5688
County: 909.355.8800
Arson Lines (suspicious activities): 909.383.5654 or 909.383.5651

Fawnskin Water Issues
The general manager from DWP reported on the water situation here. It was refreshing to get answers and explanations instead of rhetoric. Gerry has been on board locally for two years and explained his plans, challenges and goals for the valley. 33% of his budget goes to debt service and he reports that 10% of the users use 50% of the water. He commended Fawnskin for our stellar reduction in water usage.

He reported that the annual number for water meters is 160 throughout the valley (at $1117 a pop. He also said that he is a business person that is not pro growth but pro business. The monies from the meters are going back into improving the system so that the water will be available to take care of the community. He invites anyone to attend the DWP meetings the Fourth Tuesday of the month at 8am—and promised donuts to those early birds.

I am sure I am forgetting something but that is it for now!

Quick Updates!

Hey all! I’ve been busy and so here are the quickie updates:

Grout Creek
The Lake Management people are here working at placing the new flow measurement equipment at Grout Creek. They are working under the bridge today. Be sure to wave!

Bear Creek
The latest is that Bear Creek will remain open and that the business opening in the NS Tavern will start up November 1 with selective days for lunch and dinners. Things have NOT been finalized and are still in discussion—so this might change.

Oktoberfest
Cortney (4) and Jillian (3) made me do the Chicken Dance at Oktoberfest yesterday and made me coach them on the other dances, too. It was a good time celebrating Dee’s birthday. The company was good but the food wasn’t. I also had a blast talking to some of the local vendors. Nice way to spend the afternoon, anyway.

Texas Hold’em
The tournament was so popular that it is now going to be a regular gig here every Sunday at 2pm. You must be a member of the Moose Lodge to participate but it is good fun. Go check it out and register with the bartender.
I am spending some time over in Bear Lake for the next couple of weeks. So, that is another reason the updates have lightened up a bit. Feel free to post your comments and don’t forget to start “buying” your favorite politician. For those of you not living here, I’ll be posting a donation “vote” button for your favorite candidate. The monies go to community projects or equipment and the candidate who raises the most money gets to be mayor.

PS don’t forget about the community potluck tonight at Miller Park!

Puppy Therapy

There isn’t much that beats the experience of being acosted by ten little puppies. Brindle’s (aka Snickers) pups are just over four weeks old. They are now marching around and can see pretty well. Some of them are full of it. I fell in love with one female. She is going to be very confident and is super smart. (No, I am NOT getting apuppy.)

Anyway, Brindle is pretty sick of being a mom but has her figure back. In fact, she is a bit thin because the little pups are more like piglets! They are huge milk-sucking-monsters. They are beginning to explore solid food more so there is respite on the way.

Buddy is a dead-beat dad, according to Grandpa Ed. Budddy was taking care of the little critters but doesn’t want to share HIS food with them. However, he is teaching the pups doggie etiquette. Dogs have a rank order that they must adhere to. Any violations and you get in trouble. Anyway, he has a big, spooky growl and is teaching the fearless fur balls some manners.

Callah, on the other hand, still laments that the pups are not hers. The critters will be up for adoption sometime around the first week of November. Keep that in mind! Three already have homes–so that leaves seven charmers who are lookin for love.

On the North Shore Tavern side of town…
Dottie should be out of the hospital in another week or so. AND Robin (Bear Creek Nut & Coffee) is supposed to open a business in the tavern by November 1st. It will be interesting to see what happens. The up side is that the place has a nice parking lot, liquor license, and larger facility. Not sure what is going to happen with the little coffee house. Stay tuned or let me know if you know something else!

Mud Hen Heaven
The mud hens have decided that the shores just East of the public launch are ideal play grounds. Yesterday about a hundred were paddling around chortling. Today, the numbers were down to about half of that, but it is an interesting change.

Did you know we have three Great Herons over here? Also, I had to laugh when a redtailed hawk landed in a tree and scattered large groups of song birds. He wasn’t hungry and I am sure he did it on purpose!

I am probaby forgetting something but hey, there is always tomorrow!
