Fawnskin Market, North Shore Improvement Association Seeks Candidates for Fawnskin Mayor

GG’s Notes
September looks like it is going to be pretty busy around Fawnskin.
Last month flew by and I found myself working, working, working instead of taking time to kayak or amble down the highway. I’m editing this week.

After this weekend we expect things to slow down a bit but that doesn’t mean things are going to quiet down.

The closure of Fawn Park has the town of Fawnskin buzzing. Contrary to popular belief, the park is a corporately owned entity. However, townsfolk and town organizations have all donated money to the little park that they understood was earmarked to be for community use.

Get the real scuttlebutt on this issue, the status of the market, and assorted other information in this issue.

Online people have been voicing their opinions and concerns on this issue so don’t forget to visit http://www.fawnskinflyer.com for the latest scuttlebutt. Feel free to add your comments and make this publication your own.

Fawn Park
A few years ago a commercial plot in downtown Fawnskin was purchased by two celebrities who call Fawnskin home (at least some of the time).

When the park was opened, the two dedicated it to the residents and visitors of Fawnskin. Under that impression, Fawnskin townsfolk and organizations forked over donations to help get the park going and to support it.

Local, regional, and national media grabbed hold of the story and the community parkland of Fawnskin has been splashed continually in both large and small media.

Over time, the park has morphed into a quaint, beautiful park.
Used and appreciated by visitors, locals visit the charming setting and enjoy its presence.

The small location houses a stage, picnic benches, and unique items such as a memento of the Twin Towers, the “Fawnskin Five” (movie prop figures), and workout stations. There is also a horseshoe pit and a meandering path flanked by a lawn–all contained within a pristine white fence hedged with white and red flowers. (Photos are online.)

Just over a month ago the park entrances were closed. Signs read, “Closed for Today” but the park has been closed for over thirty days now.

The closure has caused confusion and ill will within the town. Visitors ask local business owners why the park is closed; donors to the cause are disturbed that the “community park” they donated funds to support remains off limits. The town wants answers.

Is it a community park? Why is the park closed? If it is not a community park, why were funds solicited for such a project?

The park is actually owned by a corporation. The closure was allegedly sparked by a feud between a former Fawnskin resident and one of the corporation board members.

Another alleged reason the park was closed is over concerns about park usage by visitors and residents during the Fawnskin Festival and other events taking place in town that weekend. Is the park not insured?
Community leaders have stated they are open to discussing general use and event park guidelines to clearly define permitting, fee, and notification.

However, they have so far declined to meet with the park owner as the feeling is that the requested meeting is not for resolution but rather for revenge on the individual credited for sparking the closure.

If you have donated funds for the community park and would like to receive answers to your questions concerning the use of those funds and the park closure contact The Fawn Park Corporation officers at (note this is public information from the non-profit tax filing):

Fawnskin Business News

Fawnskin Market
Other questions circulating in town concern the continued closure of the Fawnskin Market. I talked to the owner this week. The news is disheartening.

Unfortunately, he is still being given additional guidelines to meet prior to opening. The latest county request asks him to survey the acreage to identify the boundaries on the property. The requirements are related to adjustments that must be made for handicapped access. This means at least another 60-90 day delay.

Honorary Mayor Race
Once again it is time to get ready for the annual race for Mayor of Fawnskin.

We don’t make any bones about taking money from our voters. In fact that is how the Fawnskin Mayor is selected. The candidate who raises the most funds for the community wins the race.

If you are interested in running please contact the North Shore Improvement Association. Sue Crockett or Rick Fromm can help you out.

GG is pondering throwing her hat into the ring for the year’s race and is looking for some looney ideas–so feel free to share any with me. I want the 2007 race to be fun, entertaining, and profitable.

My interest: For those of you who are not aware, we have a serious challenge with our local fire station. The big problem is that we need upgrading. We need new equipment but my understanding is that Fire Station 49 cannot accommodate it. The bottom line…the new trucks won’t fit in the building!

The race will start shortly and conclude in December so get out those wallets!

Fawn Park

Okay, it appears that the Fawn Park issue has hit critical mass. For those of you reading from around the nation, I am including a few snaps before I post my smart mouth commentary. For the record, in opinion, this is the nicest park in the Big Bear Valley.

The pristine little park has now been closed to public use for thirty days. BTW: I am still waiting on responses from the park owner and Fawnskin organizations regarding this issue.

Fawnskin Flyer Emailed Comments

Thanks for your recent comments. I thought I would post these:

From ChrisComments: Do you happen to have a copy of the Fawnskin song-- the one that was printed on free brochures in Fawn Park?

No, I don’t. I believe a version is posted at the Fawn Park
but the anthem has not been sanctioned by the community
(to my knowledge) and is not distributed in town. If
anyone in the readership has it, please post it or
email to the Flyer and I’ll post it for you.

From KatComments: I so appreciate your flyer...its the only way I feel I can keep abreast with the latest Fawnskin information (weekender that I am). If I miss or skip reading your flyer, I often find out that I missed out on a fun picnic, or town event.

Case in point..the Friends of Fawnskin picnic (Captain Johns)---I read about it(after) in the Flyer...but got no word onit anywhere else in town. Hubby and I would have LOVED to attend and find out about the Friends of Fawnskin (their website never updates) and have been interested in joining-would have been a great opportunity, but we saw/heard nothing about it until I read it in your flyer too late.

Sorry you missed it. I
only publish the print version on a monthly basis now.
It usually lists all the events for the month. The next
issue will be out at the end of this week. The goal
is to get this online blog to be a community communications
avenue so that everyone can get the scoop. I’ve been
attempting to get residents to participate but being
a “gossip rag” tends to intimidate a few…it has
taken a year to instill trust and confidence in this
little rag. Hopefully it will become a good resource
for everyone.

This is just ONE of several things we have missed out on, due to no info posted in town,(Reggae party? What Reggae party?)or mailings or similar. Are most of the social Fawnskin happenings just word of mouth kinda stuff?

Yes, most of the events
are word of mouth but are sometimes posted around town
in the business windows or on the community board next
to the market. I have to actually dig to get the
information. Sometimes I am lucky and a few send
something in or stop me in town to tell me to
include an event or happening.

The reggae party was a private event and not open to
the public. (But that never stops anyone in Fawnskin…)

We are trying to become more active in the Fawnskin community, but find this kinda frustrating--at least for us. We want to find more intimate events where we can really mingle with Fawnskinners. The Nugget & Moose only appeal so much....

If you are ever up on
the second Monday be sure to attend the North Shore
Improvement Association since that is where homeowners
and full-time residents get together and update each other.

Otherwise, Sunday am at the Moose for breakfast is a
good place to get the scoop on happenings. NS Cafe is
another hot spot. Check the board and ask around.
Also, be sure you have memberships in the organizations
so that you can at least get information when it is
sent out.

Without your flyer, I would miss out on so much...at least a THANK YOU should go your way. Anyway, let me know if there is some type of town posting for local gigs, and how I get on a town mailing for local events, socials, gatherings, local updates on development, etc.

Thanks again...at least I've got the Flyer

Thanks for your kind
words. Join the local organizations. The town is quaint
and small so we neighbors mostly just pass the word
between each other the old fashioned way…we actually
chat between our disagreements…I call it the big
disfunctional family…

Speaking of chatting and news, there is a
garden party at 10am
this Wednesday at the Fawnskin Post Office.

Stop by and make a fuss over the fine job the garden
volunteers have been doing to beautify the Post Office
and Triangle.
